Canvey Island is a reclaimed 'island' in the Thames Estuary, separated from the mainland by a network of small creeks. Despite regular flooding, the area has been settled since Roman times. In the 17th century, Dutch engineers were called in to reinforce the sea defences, and many of them stayed. As many as a third of Canvey's street names are Dutch in origin as a consequence.
